Every self-respecting building in the Old Town of Tallinn has its own ghost story. Café Maiasmokk is no exception.
Years ago, a waitress was setting up tables in the morning before the café opened. Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a forlorn-looking lady sitting at one of the tables. The waitress did not dare to turn her head, and so kept observing the lady stealthily. The lady was wearing a long black dress, with lace covering her neck and long sleeves. There she was, looking down, with a wide-brimmed hat covering her face. From her slim build and straight posture, you could tell that this was a younger woman. When the waitress finally dared to look at the mysterious guest, the lady vanished into thin air.
Several café workers have heard whispering in the corridors after dark, and some have even been called by name by an unfamiliar female voice. Footsteps have also been clearly heard upstairs after closing time. The pictures on the walls of the rooms on the first floor also often need to be straightened: time and again, the frames have mysteriously fallen askew.
